When we talk about facility management, we must highlight the role of the technical operations manager. The technical operations manager is the one who takes on the leadership of the technical department, which means that he or she plans, coordinates and organizes all technical processes. Therefore, the manager must ensure that all employees under their wing meet the technical requirements outlined for each project.

Without proper technical operations management, it’s safe to say that the company will hardly achieve its goals and deadlines. And it’s not just the company’s current results that are compromised — the future won’t look bright either. The technical operations manager has to anticipate the needs of the company according to the scalability of the business. So, essentially, it’s about balancing technical and managerial knowledge.

A technical operations manager is in a position of leadership. By managing the technical department of the organization, this person is responsible for planning, coordinating and executing all the technical components of a project. On a regular day, this means that they have to work with the entire technical team, from engineers to project managers, and sometimes with outsourcing companies or external clients as well.

Therefore, a technical operations manager should be a good communicator, capable of developing and promoting team spirit. The manager is expected to spend most days in an office, analyzing reports and supervising the development of each project. But in dubious matters or in case of emergency, the manager must be able to perform under pressure and provide a quick and effective response.

Bearing in mind what we’ve just explained, it’s easy to understand why technical operations managers must master all the technical components of each project. However, let’s not forget their role within the company — as a member of upper management, they must find a near perfect balance between technical knowledge and managerial skills.

As a department leader, the technical operations manager should be prepared to advise on potential improvements and anticipate future needs. In addition, it’s necessary to articulate the technical operations with those of other departments, while never losing track of the company’s business plan. It is for these reasons that many companies require training in computer science or information science combined with four to five years of experience in a leadership position.
